Around the world, forests play a key role in environment protection and day by day assure the survival of a great number of people. The UN declared 2011 as the International Year of Forests, with the aim of reminding the role carried out by forests in sustainable development.

Latin America and the Caribbean possess 57% of the forests in the world and concentrate great part of the world's biodiversity. The 49% of Latin America and the Caribbean are covered by forests, and have an approximate 891 million hectare, which represent 22% of the area of forests globally. Uruguay, unlike other countries, went from 200.000 ha of productive artificial forests to 1 million planted ha; and from 570.000 ha of native forests to more than 700.000 ha, these changes increased in a 40% the area covered by native forests.

En todo el mundo, los bosques no sólo representan un elemento clave en la protección del medio ambiente sino que además aseguran, día a día, la supervivencia de numerosas poblaciones. Con el objetivo de recordar el papel que desempeñan los bosques en el desarrollo sostenible, el 2011 ha sido declarado Año Internacional de los Bosques por las Naciones Unidas.

América Latina y el Caribe poseen el 57% de los bosques del mundo y concentran gran parte de la bio-diversidad mundial. El 49% de la superficie de América Latina y el Caribe se encuentra cubierta por bosques, con aproximadamente 891 millones de hectáreas que representan el 22% del área de bosques existente en el planeta. Uruguay, a diferencia de otros países, pasó de tener 200.000 hectáreas de bosque productivo artificial a un millón de hectáreas forestadas y de 570.000 hectáreas de bosque nativo a superar las 700.000 hectáreas, situación que aumentó en un 40% la superficie de bosques nativos.
